​The Department of Neurophysiology carries out examinations of patients with diseases of the brain, nervous system and muscles.

The Department of Neurophysiology carries out examinations of patients with diseases of the brain, nervous system and muscles, including epilepsy, disseminated sclerosis, neuritis, nerve damage and muscular atrophy.​​

​Such examinations are done by measuring the electric signals that are formed from the nervous system and the musculature and the examinations contribute to diagnosing diseases, monitoring the development of diseases and assessing treatment results.

The Department of Neurophysiology carries out studies for all clinical departments at Rigshospitalet and many patients are referred from especially the Department of Neurology, the Department of Neurosurgery, the Department of Paediatrics, the Department of Rheumatology and the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery.​

​Approx. 8,500 patients are examined at the department each year. ​

Examinations methods ​

The specific methods include EEG examinations, evoked potentials, nerve conduction studies and EMG examinations. ​​The department also performsintra-operative monitoring during surgery of the spinal cord and spinal column and during epilepsy and tumor surgery of the brain. In collaboration with the Department of Neurology, the Department of Neurosurgery, the Department of Neurophysiology provide staff for the epilepsy monitoring unit to diagnose patients with complicated epilepsy.​​

Organisation

The Department of Neurophysiology is part of the Neuroscience Center of Rigshospitalet and is located mainly at Rigshospitalet, both at Blegdamsvej and Glostrup, where patients are examined/monitored at the department, in the epilepsy monitoring unit (situated in the Department of Neurology), and in neurosurgical operating theatres.

Furthermore, the department  consists of laboratories at Bispebjerg Hospital, primarily EEG examinations and the dystony laboratory at Hillerød Hospital, primarily EEG examinations and nerve conduction studies.​​

Presentation at European Lung Cancer Congress

​A newly published study revealed a high frequency of germline pathogenic variants in patients with mesothelioma including variants in two genes not previously associated with mesothelioma. The data support germline testing in these patients to identify potential actionable targets and genetic counseling.​​

Researchers investigate the effect of sleep extension in children

​Many children and young people sleep less than recommended. With a donation from the Novo Nordisk Research Foundation, researchers from University of Copenhagen and Copenhagen University Hospital - Rigshospitalet will study the effect of sleep extension on weight, metabolism and learning in 6–9-year-old children.

Intestinal bacteria may be an important piece in the jigsaw puzzle of multiple sclerosis

​Findings of bacteria with anti-inflammatory effects in the intestines of sclerosis patients with no evidence of active disease indicate that diet, bacteria and disease progression are linked.
