About us
Paediatric Oncology Research Laboratory, Bonkolab, is the research laboratory for the Paediatric Oncology Unit at Rigshospitalet. The research at Bonkolab covers all areas of childhood oncology in close collaboration with the clinic. With more than 100 employees, Bonkolab consists of researchers, laboratory staff, nurses, statisticians, a legal advisor, an IT specialist, a scientific coordinator. Bonkolab is led by professor in paediatrics and paediatric oncology Kjeld Schmiegelow together with cand.soc. and associate professor Hanne Bækgaard Larsen, professor in immunology Klaus Müller, consultant and senior researcher René Mathiasen and consultant Lisa Hjalgrim.
Research
The research at Bonkolab is interdisciplinary and covers all areas of peadiatric oncology, ranging from genetics, pharmacokinetics and toxicology to experimental treatment and psychosocial effects of cancer and treatment. Bonkolab research contains both hematological cancers as well as hard and soft tumors, including rare cancer diseases.

Laboratory services
The laboratory at Bonkolab provides both internal and external services in accordance with international quality standards. The laboratory staff sets up analyses related to peadiatric cancer for in house research and for external use while offering services related to rheumatology and gastrointestinal diseases both nationally and abroad. Furthermore, the laboratory can aid internal and external research projects with handling and biobanking of biological material.
Laboratory analysis provided include:
- Analyses (LC-MS) for anticancer agents and their metabolites in blood and DNA
- Isolation and PCR-amplification of mRNA and DNA
- Genotyping (single nucleotide polymorphisms)
- DNA-index analysis
