The main aim of the psychosocial rehabilitation is to explore how children, adolescents, and young adults (AYA) as well as their families can live a normal life as possible during and after treatment.
A fundamental research concept is early cross-sectoral interprofessional intervention research from a child centered perspective.
At Bonkolab the psychosocial rehabilitation research centers around four main areas; 1. how children and AYA can maintain their social bond and interaction with friends; 2. how children and AYA can continue their education and integration within their school environment; 3. how children and AYA can be physically active and engage in activities with their peers and family; and 4. how, treatment and care can be structured to meet the family’s needs to the highest degree, in all phases of the cancer treatment trajectory, including palliative and terminal care.
Currently, interventions studies are conducted in all four areas e.g., by including the children and AYA´s classmates in in-hospital treatment, by telepresence robot education in the schools, by participating in physical activity during intensive treatment, by supportive interventions to children, AYA, siblings and parents including organization of homebased treatment, as well as studies addressing social inequality and palliative and end-of-life care. The studies use qualitative, quantitative methods, physical testing as well as cohort studies.
