A main aim in pediatric oncology research is to explore the potential of immune mechanisms to fight cancer cells. This strategy was initiated decades ago with the introduction of allogeneic stem cell transplantation and has significantly increased overall survival in children with high-risk leukemia. 

This concept of treatment has within the last decade led to further development to improve the efficacy of cancer immune therapy while in the same time reducing toxicity of the treatment. This may be achieved either by enhancing the patient’s natural immune response to the cancer or by genetically reprogramming the patient’s own immune cells to fight cancer cells. 

At BONKOLAB several current research projects address various aspects of cancer immune therapy including characterization of immune profiles in patients undergoing cancer immune therapy, interactions between host immune cells and cancer cells, in house production of genetically modified immune cells and studies addressing the role of genetic variation and metabolism.
