In this booklet you can read what will happen before, during and after the operation.

The day before the operation

The day before the operation, you must call the ward between 13:00 and 15:00 and ask forthe meeting time. This is also where you will arrange fasting times and the time for applying local anesthetic cream.

The day of admission and surgery

You will arrive as agreed for admission at the ward for Children and Adolescents with Surgical Diseases of the Stomach, Intestines and Urinary Tracts, 4053, on the day of the operation.  

The ward is located in entrance 4 on the 5th floor. 
It is important that your child is fasting before the operation, to make sure that the stomach is completely empty. 
 

Follow these fasting rules:

6 hours before the appointment, the child must fast, which means, your child must not eat food (including chewing gum), consume dairy products or juice with pulp. 

Up to 1 hour before the appointment, it is recommended that your child drink clear liquids, such as water, lemonade, apple juice (filtered) or sugar water. 

Formula may be given up to 4 hours before the appointment. 
If you are breastfeeding, you may breastfeed up to 3 hours before the appointment. 

It might be a good idea for you to eat breakfast yourself before waking the child.

Local anesthetic patch or cream

Your child will have local anesthetic patch/cream on the backs of both hands, where the blood vessels can be seen, the "blue lines". 
Your child will have a PVC (a small plastic tube in the vein) inserted in connection with the operation.
The local anesthetic means that the child will hardly feel the injection.
It can be purchased over the counter at the pharmacy.

It is important that you read the package leaflet for the recommended dose. 
0-2 years: We recommend the cream.  
3 years +: Patch or cream. 

The dose is distributed and attached with plastic wrap, as it is more gentle.  
Small children often put their hands in their mouths,  we recommend using a  
sock, with the toe tip cut off, over the plastic wrap. 

The local anesthetic is applied 1 hour before the operation.

Upon arrival

When you arrive at the ward, you will be greeted by a nurse and shown to your room. 
Your child will be given hospital clothes and a bracelet with their name and CPR number on it.
Your child will have their blood pressure and pulse measured and will be measured in height and weighed. 

The ward only has two private rooms, so you will typically be in a room with 2-3 other children with their parents.
There is a TV by each bed, which is muted for the sake of fellow patients, remember to bring headphones. 

Next to your child's bed there is an extra bed for one parent, a bedside table  
and a locker with a key for clothes and bags. However, there is not much space, so only bring the most necessary. 
Before the operation, you will have the opportunity to talk to the pediatric surgeon. You will have the opportunity to ask questions about the operation.
If you have not already spoken to an anesthesiologist to plan anesthesia and pain management, you will be offered this, before the surgery. 

Food for the patient and one parent

The food is located at the children's kitchen on the 6th floor.
The ward also has a kitchen with a refrigerator and microwave among other things, which you are welcome to use.

The operation 

You will go to the operating room and will be with your child until he or she has been anesthetized/asleep. 
It is not possible for you to stay with your child during the operation.
We recommend that you make arrangements with the staff about where you will wait, so that we can easily contact you. 

Always let the staff know if you are leaving the ward and make sure that we have your  mobile number. 

After the operation

When the operation is over, your child will be moved to the recovery room, and you will be called. 
When the recovery room staff assess that your child is ready, you will be followed back to the ward.
