The research conducted at the Department of Ophthalmology at Rigshospitalet aims to prevent and treat eye diseases, blindness, and visual impairment.

The research covers all aspects of the functions of the eye and visual system, all age groups, and both diseases that occur solely in the eye and diseases that affect other organs.

Treatment includes not only medical and surgical interventions but also counseling and retraining (rehabilitation), which improve the possibilities for living with reduced or absent visual function.

The Department of Ophthalmology in its current form has been formed by merging all ophthalmology departments in Region Hovedstaden.

The Department of Ophthalmology also conducts laboratory research in collaboration with the University of Copenhagen.

The Research Section consists of 10 permanent staff members, including optometrists, nurses, doctors, and administrative staff.

We have three types of research studies:

  • Industry-sponsored studies
Through our many years of experience with research studies, we have a good reputation worldwide for attracting new studies to test new drugs or modes of administration, including those for retinal diseases, glaucoma, and corneal diseases. This may involve testing as-yet-unapproved medications for various eye diseases.

  • Service studies
Treatment-related studies originating from other hospital departments. This could involve testing new cancer drugs, for example, which could have side effects on the eyes.

  • Ph.D. studies
We are the initiators ourselves, and the studies are funded through grants. Research is conducted on a wide range of eye diseases, ranging from the outer to the posterior part of the eye.

The Research Section is scientifically very productive and produces up to 100 scientific articles annually based on the studies.

We have access to a range of different equipment. This includes new equipment used for both research studies and patient examination in the daily clinic.
