Rigshospitalet recognized among the world’s best hospitals in 2026

The 2026 edition of World’s Best Hospitals, published annually by Newsweek, places two Nordic hospitals among the global top fifteen, with Rigshospitalet – Copenhagen University Hospital at 15th place and Karolinska University Hospital at 4th place worldwide. It is an acknowledgement of the strong tradition for high‑quality, publicly funded healthcare in the Nordic region.

The ranking of Rigshospitalet, together with the strong placements of Aarhus University Hospital (25) and Odense University Hospital (88), clearly demonstrates the strength of Danish healthcare. It is a recognition highlighting the strength and international relevance of Danish healthcare solutions, supported by decades of investment in research, innovation, clinical excellence, and highly specialized care. Rigshospitalet is proud to contribute to the global visibility of our national strengths.

- The ranking highlights the robustness and quality that characterize the Danish healthcare system, where hospitals and healthcare professionals work every day to create the best possible treatments and pathways for patients. I am pleased that our joint efforts are receiving international recognition. These strong rankings enhance Denmark's global competitiveness and strengthen our opportunities to attract strategic partnerships, research funding, and investments that ultimately benefit the patients, says Rasmus Møgelvang, Chief Executive at Rigshospitalet.

The strong result reflects the dedication of healthcare professionals across the hospital, as well as close collaboration with national and international partners, all working with a shared ambition to create value for patients and advance the Danish healthcare system.

In this year's assessment, more than 2,500 hospitals across 32 countries were evaluated, with the top 250 institutions included in the final ranking.

The Newsweek ranking is based on four primary sources:

  • Hospital quality metrics: Publicly available data on care quality, hygiene, and staffing.
  • Peer recommendations: Thousands of medical experts, including doctors and hospital managers, were surveyed to recommend top hospitals in their own and other countries.
  • Patient experience: Data on patient satisfaction and perceived care quality.
  • PROMs implementation: Assessment of how hospitals use patient‑reported outcome measures to evaluate treatment impact and quality of life.

Rigshospitalet has been featured in the ranking for many years, maintaining a stable placement among the world's leading hospitals.

The top five hospitals for World's Best Hospitals 2026 are:

  1. Mayo Clinic – Rochester
  2. University Health Network - Toronto General Hospital
  3. Cleveland Clinic
  4. Karolinska Universitetssjukhuset
  5. Massachusetts General Hospital
