TESA is a procedure where we take a small sample of sperm producing tissue from your testicle The procedure takes approximately 10 – 15 minutes.

One hour before the TESA, we recommend that you take two tablets of Paracetamol, (500 mg x 2). It will help to reduce the tenderness during and after the treatment. We can offer you a tablet Halcion 0,125 mg as a sedative if you are nervous. Please notice, that you are not allowed to drive a car for the next 24 hours if you need the sedative.
TESA procedure
The doctor will apply some disinfection liquid on the skin of the scrotum. It might give a short burning sensation.
You will be covered with a sterile cloth on the area and the doctor will put a hold of one of the testicles through the procedure.
TESA is performed under local analgesia on the scrotum. A thin needle is being used and you may feel a short pain or discomfort. After three minutes the local analgesia is effective, and the doctor will aspirate a small amount of the sperm producing tissue from the testicle.
The tissue will be examined in the laboratory rightaway and if we see sperm cells in the tissue the procedure is over.
If we need more tissue samples we will aspirate one more time.
After the TESA you will get a cooling ice-bag on your scrotum to reduce the small bleeding and swelling. You are welcome to rest for 15-20 minutes.
After 15 – 20 minutes you can remove the cooling bag.
When you get home
We recommend that you relax for the rest of the day and do not lift anything that is heavier than 1 kg for the next 2 -3 days.
If you are sore, you are welcome to take 1g of Paracetamol.
It is common to have some tenderness and a little swelling in the testicle for a few days after the procedure.
It is very unlikely, but if you experience symptoms of infection with strong pain, fever or swelling of your testicle you must call 1813. It can be a complication that is needed to be treated with antibiotics.
