Congratulations on your newborn, and welcome to our Family Ward in the North Wing. We hope you will have a pleasant stay in the department, and we look forward to meeting you.
During your admission to the Family Ward, we will guide, advise, and support you in matters such as family bonding and your baby’s wellbeing – including breastfeeding establishment. Please feel free to ask us for advice at any time.
The department and length of your stay
The Family Ward has nine family rooms. Here, you, your partner, or another accompanying person can stay with your newborn for up to two days.
About the department
Internet access
Free internet access is available during your stay. Rigshospitalet has an open network called RegHGaest. Log in using your phone number and email address – no code is required.
Calling Staff
The staff you will meet are midwives and student midwives. If you have any questions or need guidance, you can call staff by pressing the button with the small person symbol, or you can come out and find a midwife.
We have shift changes from 07:00–07:15, 15:00–15:15, and 23:15–23:30. During these times, staff hand over to the next shift. If your need for assistance is not urgent, we kindly ask you to wait until after the shift change
If you need urgent emergency assistance, press the small red button on the panel behind the bed.
Visiting Hours
Visiting is unrestricted. We encourage you to consider other patients, so both your own and others’ need for rest and quiet are respected. Visitors may stay in your room, by the kitchen, or in the common areas on the ground floor.
A guest toilet with baby changing facilities is located in the hallway.
Good to Know
Examinations
All newborns are offered an eye examination, a hearing screening and a PKU- test (a blood sample from the baby’s heel). The PKU test must be taken when the baby is between 48 and 72 hours old. The hearing screening can be done during your stay, but it is also possible to have it done as an outpatient.
Practical Information
During your stay in the Family Ward, there are some practical tasks you are asked to take care of yourselves.
For the sake of other patients, relatives, and staff, please be clothed when walking around the common areas.
Accompanying relatives are expected to help with practical tasks, such as fetching clean clothes, towels, etc., for the new mother and baby.
Changing Table
There is a changing table in every room. Clean baby clothes, diapers, maternal pads, etc., can be found on the table in the hallway.
Refrigerator and Kettle
The refrigerator and kettle in the room are for expressed breast milk only, which must be stored cold and heated properly. Please remember to empty the refrigerator before discharge.
