We recommend that your child undergoes a blood test, called a PKU test or a heel blood test. We examine the blood for 25 rare, congenital diseases. The heel blood test is performed 48-72 hours after birth.
The examination takes place either during admission to the Maternity Ward or in the Outpatient Clinic for Children's Blood Sampling.
You should expect the examination to last about 15 minutes. However, there may be some waiting time.
If you are admitted to the hospital when the baby is between 48 and 72 hours old, a bioanalyst will come and take the blood sample in the room where you are staying. You must fill out the PKU form (the green form) yourself before the bioanalyst arrives. See the picture below.
If you have been discharged, the blood sample will be taken at the Outpatient Clinic for Children's Blood Sampling. The address is Inge Lehmannsvej, entrance 3, ground floor, section 3004. The appointment for the blood sampling will be booked by the staff on the maternity ward. You must fill out the PKU form (the green form) yourself before attending the outpatient clinic. There is no maternity staff in the outpatient clinic. If you have questions about your child's well-being or anything else related to your birth/child, we refer you to the maternity phone at tel: 21 60 56 84.
The examination
We take the blood sample by pricking with a needle on the outer side of the baby's heel. We squeeze out some drops of blood, which are collected with a small tube. The blood sample is sent for further examination.
While we take the blood sample, we give the baby some sugar water in the mouth, or the mother can breastfeed it. Sugar water or milk helps the baby feel the prick less.
Response to the blood sample
You will only receive a response to the blood sample if we find signs of disease. In that case, a pediatrician will discuss the further course of action. If the blood sample shows signs of disease, we will provide a response within 1 week.
Completion of the PKU form
Highlighted in orange in the picture:
Fill in the mother's CPR number (Mor CPR-nr) and name (Fornavn)(Efternavn), as well as the child's CPR number (Barn CPR-nr).
Highlighted in red in the picture:
Fill in the week of pregnancy the child was born in (Fulde graviditetsuger), the child's birth weight (Fødselsvægt), gender (Girl=Pige) (Boy=Dreng), and time of birth (Fødselstidspunkt).
It is important to:
- Remember to fill out the PKU form.
- Remember to bring the PKU form with you to the blood sampling.
- Have the child's CPR number with you.
