Areas of research

Laboratory of Reproductive Biology (LRB) is a multifunctional unit, constituted by a national tissue bank for cryopreserved gonadal tissue and an independent research unit.

LRB have more than 60 years of experience with research in reproductive biology, in particular ovarian physiology, and reproductive endocrinology. Our research is primarily focused around the regulation and interplay between ovarian and follicular compartments leading to oocyte competence and maturation.

Our research focus includes:

  • Cryopreservation and transplantation of gonadal tissue
  • Characterization preantral and antral follicle development
  • Intrafollicular hormone profiling
  • Culture of human granulosa cells
  • Culture of human theca cells
  • Isolation and culture of human preantral follicles
  • In vitro maturation (IVM) of human oocytes
  • Genetic analysis of single nucleotide polymorphisms
  • Epigenetic regulation of follicle development
  • Cell-based hormonal therapy
