Department of Pathology

The Department of Pathology at Rigshospitalet performs highly specialized diagnostics through tissue and sample microscopy as well as analyses. The diagnostics play a crucial role in the medical assessment of diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment selection. We serve as the Danish reference center for prion diseases and have an experimental research unit, the Bartholin Institute, which conducts research on type 1 diabetes and brain cancer.

The foundation of the department lies in our professional expertise, where our key pillars of diagnostics, research, and education work in synergy to provide the best service for our patients.

In pathology, results from cell- and tissue-based analyses are translated into a diagnosis with prognostic and predictive indicators, forming the basis for precision treatment of (malignant) diseases. All of the department's results and diagnoses are disseminated in an integrated report and systematically entered into a national database (Patobank). The department's diagnostics adhere to the latest international/WHO standards.

The demand for pathology services has been increasing over the past 10 years and is expected to continue rising. Increased complexity in disease classification and corresponding treatment has led to a trend of specialization and centralization of diagnostics and treatment. For pathology, this has amplified the need for (international) consultations and second opinions for pathologists in these knowledge centers, including the Department of Pathology at Rigshospitalet.

The Department of Pathology serves Rigshospitalet, Bispebjerg Hospital, Gentofte Hospital, Nordsjællands Hospital, Frederiksberg Hospital's gynecological department, as well as Bornholm Central Hospital, general practitioners in the Bornholm regional municipality, and the healthcare systems of Greenland and the Faroe Islands with pathological-anatomical diagnostics based on microscopic examinations of organs, tissues, and cells.
