​The strong foundation of Rigshospitalet is integrated into the design of Mary Elizabeth’s Hospital, which will support the future healthcare paradigm: bringing experts to the patients, not the other way around. Currently, about a third of children and teens are treated in the adult departments at Rigshospitalet.

The aim is to bring together all pediatric specialties and expertise in one building, creating a seamless integration of treatment, research, development, and education. Mary Elizabeth’s Hospital is organized around three core functions on the second, third, and fourth floors: intensive care units (PICU and NICU), a shared pediatric diagnostic unit, and 15 operating rooms.

There is a short distance between the core functions – reducing critical transfers and minimizing risks. With one central and well-functioning core, the surgical and medical departments have the security and focus to concentrate on effective and optimized patient journeys, with the patient and family at the center.

Research facilities and offices are centrally located on a dedicated professional floor to encourage clinical research and interdisciplinary knowledge-sharing. The central location makes it easy for clinicians to move between departments.
