Integrated play

A playful culture will shape the future hospital experience, focusing on enhancing family well-being and providing children with a sense of safety.

At Mary Elizabeth's Hospital we integrate a playful culture into all aspects of the hospital experience to strengten well-being and development for children and teens during their stay. For children, play is a natural part of life and can be a valuable tool in coping with illness and being in the hospital. Our goal is to create the best possible conditions for both free play, as they know it from home, and more goal-oriented play related to treatments, all tailored to the specific situation.

A systematic approach to play is needed to ensure coherence and a shared professional culture around the playful environment. At MARYS, we focus on three key areas: "Patient and Family," "Patient and Professional," and "Professional to Professional." Each area is built with the elements of mind-set, methods, and physical environment, ensuring an integrated and consistent playful culture. Play must be developed at the intersection of these elements to ensure integration across all areas.

We also prioritize research to develop evidence-based methods, ensuring that our approach remains scientifically grounded. All staff members with patient contact will receive training in how to use play when interacting with families to promote relationships and well-being.

Play is also adapted to the physical environment of the hospital; from subtle integrations in treatment rooms to more open and free play opportunities in dedicated spaces. Our design aims to meet the needs and expectations of users, allowing play to unfold as a positive part of the hospital experience. By creating spaces that encourage play, we support families in navigating the challenges of the hospital and help them find joy during a difficult time.
