Feasibility study
Feasibility study mapped patient pathways and made recommendations, including international insights. The future hospital experience is designed with the involvement of patients, relatives, and staff. This work now forms the foundation for the project's content and dimensions.
Design
The competition to design Mary Elizabeth's Hospital was initiated on June 15, 2016, with six consortia from Denmark and abroad participating. Three teams progressed to the second round, and on August 23, 2017, the consortium consisting of 3XN, Arkitema, Niras, Kristine Jensen's Architectural Studio, and Rosan Bosch Studio was declared the winner.
After the selection of the winning project, it took about two years to finalize the design of the 60,000 m2 building. This process took place in several phases, with the project becoming increasingly detailed. The first phase involved intensive input from all kinds of users: patients, relatives, staff, and design, technical, and logistics specialists.
At the same time, architects and engineers detailed the solutions, ensuring they met the current needs together with the users. In the final phase of the design, architects and engineers reviewed the entire building based on all the knowledge gathered from the users.
Preparation
During this period, the site was prepared for the upcoming construction. Existing buildings, including the Rockefeller building, were demolished, and a retaining wall was built to prevent soil erosion when excavation began.
Two tunnels were established, which will connect Mary Elizabeth's Hospital with the rest of Rigshospitalet.
Construction
This period includes tendering and the selection of contractors who will build the building and manage the construction process. The first period on the construction site was spent setting up and positioning the cranes, so there wasn't much visible activity. After about a year, progress accelerated as concrete elements and the facade were erected. During the final phase of construction, most of the work will take place indoors, and there will be little visible activity from the outside.
Move-in
In 2027, the building will be ready for use, and the staff will welcome the first patient.
