Simultaneous PET/MR scanner

​At the DCPR in collaboration with the Department of nuclear medicine and radiology, we employ a state-of-the art simultaneous PET and MR scanner to evaluate functional brain changes and their association to receptor occupancy and neurochemical changes.

​Simultaneous PET-MR is an advanced imaging system used at the DCPR that integrates the molecular detail of PET with the structural and functional imaging capabilities of MRI. This combined approach allows for the simultaneous collection of intricate data, offering a nuanced perspective on brain structure and neurochemical activity.


We are currently utilising this PET-MR technology to investigate the neurological effects of LSD, specifically its binding affinity at the 5-HT2A receptor. Alongside receptor occupancy data from PET, real-time fMRI (BOLD) and perfusion measures are taken to capture alterations in neural activity and blood flow. By generating this multi-faceted data set in a single scan, we can directly relate receptor engagement to changes in neural processes and blood circulation. This methodical approach contributes to our understanding of the intricate mechanisms through which LSD acts, and aids in the development of targeted therapeutic applications.
