A single center cross sectional study aiming to investigate the surgical staff’s (n=150) perception on the WHO Surgical Safety Checklist in a gynecological operating ward at the Juliane Marie Center, Rigshospitalet. The method will be a questionnaire-based approach using Research Electronic Data Capture (REDCap), which gives each participant a unique identifier to anonymize the data.

The WHO Surgical Safety Checklist (SSC) is a mandatory initiative adopted by most hospitals worldwide, including Denmark. The aim is to strengthen communication and teamwork among the surgical staff in the operation room (OR) and thus improving surgical safety. However, at the gynecological OR at the Juliane Marie Centre, we experienced by video-observation with the OR Black Box, that the SSC was used in an unstructured and non-compliant way – by all staff groups. This stands in contrast to data registered in the electronic health records, which shows high compliance. A study seeking to address the connection between the surgical staff’s perception of WHO SSC and the compliance towards the WHO SSC in the OR, could ultimately contribute to optimizing surgical safety. 

This study aims to investigate surgical staff’s perception regarding the WHO’s SSC and furthermore investigate whether there is a correlation between perceptions and the observed use of the WHO SSC through the Black Box system.

Observational single center study utilizing a questionnaire-based approach to different surgical staff groups i.e. OR nurses, nurse anesthetists, surgeons, and anesthesiologists working in the gynecological operating ward at JMC, Rigshospitalet. 

The questionnaire will be distributed through the secured web application REDCap (REsearch Data Capture) using e-mails. All data will be stored in a secure way according to Danish Protection Standard. Each participant will be given a unique identifier in order to analyze anonymized.
