Register based research in long term health in children born after assisted reproductive technology, with a focus on cardiovascular and metabolic disease.

Assisted reproductive technology (ART) is associated with higher rates of preterm birth, low birth weight and being born small for gestational age, which are risk factors for future metabolic syndrome. Furthermore, children born after frozen embryo transfer (FET) have an increased risk of being born large for gestational age and with a high birth weight, which has been found to increase the risk of type 1 diabetes (DM1). A previous study on 3,138,540 Swedish children, found no association between ART and DM1 when compared to non-ART children but found an increased risk of DM1 in children born after FET compared to fresh embryo transfer.

Long term registries on ART children are sparse. We will perform register-based research using the Nordic CoNARTaS database. The registry contains data collected from the National Medical Birth Registers from Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Finland, where information on maternal, obstetric, and perinatal outcomes was recorded. We aim to look at the long-term cardio-metabolic health of children born from ART compared to the non-ART children in the Nordic countries.
