In the Danish Center for Sleep Surgery, Department of Otorhinolaryngology and Audiology, Rigshospitalet, we offer our partners an opportunity to refer patients with obstructive sleep apnea who for various reasons cannot use the CPAP machine or other non-surgical treatment.
As something new, we offer a sleep endoscopy (binocular examination), which is carried out while the patient is lightly sedated with sleeping pills. The purpose of the study is to clarify where in the pharynx the closure occurs in connection with the breathing pauses, so that we can target the individual's treatment. Some patients will subsequently be recommended an operation, while others are recommended a snoring splint or to continue with the CPAP machine. They subsequent operations are different, depending on where in the throat the problem is.
The unit gathers research and knowledge on surgical evaluation and treatment of obstructive sleep apnea. The goal is to increase the degree of evidence-based surgical treatment.
