Department of Otorhinolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery & Audiology

The clinic treats children, adults and elderly with ear, nose and throat disorders. In order to be treated in the clinic you must have a referral from an ear-nose-throat specialist or a general practitioner (GP).

About us

The department treats people's ear-nose-throat disorders. The department’s field of work is traditionally divided into three groups:

Ear diseases
Nose and sinus disorders
Head-neck surgery.

Children and young people are admitted to the Pediatric Department at the Centre of Head and Orthopaedics.

Responsibility and patient safety

The department carries out its responsibilities on the basis of the overall visions and goals of Rigshospitalet complying with a highly international level for complex and specialised treatment, clinical research and a learning culture.

Furthermore we focus on a sound working environment and cooperation as well as professional development and well-being for the individual and at the department as a whole.

To be able to provide high quality in complex care and treatment courses continuously, work is done within all specialist groups on research and development at departmental level. The department continuously works on patient safety and the development of quality in health services.

International collaboration

We collaborate with many international partners:

Participation in the European collaboration about Sentinel-Node surgery of oral cavity cancer
Annual joint meeting is held with the South Swedish ear-nose-throat departments about joint projects and procedures
Participation in the European research cooperation about vasculitis and Wegeners granulomatosis
Active collaboration has been established on othological Greenland medicine with the Greenlandic Institute of Circumpolar Health in Nuuk.

The department also cooperates with the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Copenhagen on hosting two annual international surgery courses:

Head and neck surgery, ear surgery and nose-sinus surgery and advanced endoscopic nose-sinus
Anterior basis cranii surgery

Aviation

Aviation and submarine medicine is subject to international collaboration as there exists an international code for health examinations within this field. Thus all Danish professional pilots hold an EU JAR flight certificate and some pilots also hold an American FAA certificate.

Centres and Units

Copenhagen Hearing and Balance Center

Brings together treatment and research into hearing and balance disorders across the Capital Region of Denmark. Operates in the North Wing at Rigshospitalet, as well as facilities at Bispebjerg Hospital and Hillerød Hospital, in collaboration with DTU, the University of Copenhagen, and patient associations.

Danish Center for Sleep Surgery

Consolidates research and knowledge on the surgical evaluation and evidence-based treatment of obstructive sleep apnea.

Unit for Military Aviation Medicine

Conducts highly specialized aeromedical examinations in agreement with the Danish military.

Unit for Otorhinolaryngology and Audiology in Greenland

Supports treatment, research, education, and development within ENT (ear, nose, and throat) and audiology in Greenland.

Unit for Sense of Taste and Smell

Examines and evaluates individuals suffering from a reduced or altered sense of smell and taste, regardless of the underlying cause.

Conditions and treatments

The Department of Otorhinolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery & Audiology is the largest ENT-department in Denmark, diagnosing and treating both congenital and acquired diseases - surgically and medically - in the ear, nose, paranasal sinuses, oral cavity, salivary glands, pharynx, larynx, thyroid, and neck.

Our specialized clinical focus areas and treatments include:

Head and neck cancer: The treatment of head and neck cancer is carried out in close collaboration with the regional head-and-neck oncological departments.
Sino-nasal surgery: The department performs all types of advanced endoscopic sino-nasal surgery for both benign and malignant conditions. By utilizing state-of-the-art technology such as mobile CT (XCAT) and CT/MRI-fusion, the department holds a leading position in Scandinavia.
Vestibulogy and neurootology: The vestibular unit provides comprehensive diagnostics and treatment within modern vestibulogy, covering both standard and highly advanced procedures.
Dizziness and balance disorders: The Vestibular section offers specialized care for complicated cases of otoliths using the advanced Epley Omniax chair.
Robotic surgery: Advanced head and neck surgical procedures are performed using our surgical robot, creating new treatment possibilities with fewer repercussions for patients.

Research

Research in ear, nose and throat diseases at Rigshospitalet includes basic research and clinical research. The research is divided in three main areas: The ear (including audiology and vestibulogy), nose and sinuses and head and neck (including cancer). The department has 8 professors:

Christian von Buchwald, Per Cayé -Thomasen, Mads Sølvsten, Vibeke Backer, Måns Magnusson, Lone Percy-Smith, Stefania Serafin and Torsten Dau.
