Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery

The Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery treats different types of diseases, development anomalies, infections and lesions in teeth, oral cavity, jaws and surrounding anatomatical regions.

The Department Of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery treats diseases, serious infections, abnormalities, cancer and lesions in teeth, the oral cavity and the jaw, for the whole Capital Region of Denmark. The department is also responsible for national functions with regard to specialist treatment and often works closely together with other hospital specialities such as plastic surgery or cervical surgery. The department is also responsible for regional dental care for the Capital Region of Denmark and shares its location with the Odontological Knowledge Centre.

The department has existed as an independent unit since 1910.  Dental, oral and maxillofacial surgeons treat jaw fractures, correct over or underbite and perform implant treatment. The department also treats patients who have been in an accident and who therefore need to have their face, teeth or mouth reconstructed.

Core services of the department:

  • Patient treatment and care
  • Teaching and training
  • Research and development
We also has a national function in the speciality. The treatments usually cannot be carried out at private dentist practices as they require hospital facilities.

The department consists of an outpatient department for preliminary examination and treatment planning (often together with other departments), simple treatments and re-examination.

We  also has a surgical ward where procedures are done under full anaesthesia, and a ward for admitted patients.
