We use several strategies to re-create functional tissues by combining autologous cells/tissues with different biomaterials for tissue engineering purposes. We want to develop tissue engineered products that are easily available to many patients by being manufactured in an ordinary surgical unit and thus not needing advanced laboratory settings for cell culturing and complex ex vivo manipulations.
We also explore wound healing responses in healthy tissues and compare these in diseased tissues. Eventually, wound healing and tissue reconstruction could be enhanced by actions of different molecules for better wound healing and lesser scarring after the surgical reconstruction.
The Laboratory of Tissue Engineering, led by principal investigator prof. Magdalena Fossum, is part of the Clinical Academic Groups of Greater Copenhagen Health Science Partners, which is a research consortium that integrates clinical research related to surgical treatment for genitourinary reconstructions and fertility restoration, the CAG-SURF.
