Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia Laboratory

Combining translational, data-driven and clinical research by bringing together physician researchers and data scientists to develop individually tailored antineoplastic treatment and sup-portive care in hematology with specific focus on chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL).

CLL is the most common leukemia in Western countries. The clinical course of CLL is highly heterogeneous. During the last decade, the treatment options for CLL has developed from maximum tolerated chemoimmunotherapy to targeted therapies. This has revealed the unmet need to systematically consider disease features, patient characteristics including comorbidities, logistics and patients’ preferences alike to provide the optimal individualized treatment for patients. Thus, a more comprehensive data-driven approach to immune complications, treatment outcomes, and disease outcomes among patients with hematological cancer is warranted. 

By capturing paraclinical, clinical and demographic data along with genetic and functional characterization of primary hematological cancer cells in our data laboratory, we assemble multidimensional data on patients with CLL through the Danish Lymphoid Cancer Research (DALY-CARE) data resource. With a unique three-pronged setup combining translational re-search, clinical trials and registry based "real world evidence", we explore patterns predictive of treatment outcome, infectious complications and disease outcome upon specific treatment.

  • Development of machine learning based algorithms, so-called medical Artificial Intelli-gence, with publication of a number of predictive algorithms in hematology. 
  • The first fully data-driven decision support tool, CLL-TIM, deployed in the electronic health record system Sundhedsplatformen and tested in the randomized phase 2 clini-cal trial PreVent-ACaLL. 
  • Developing investigator-initiated, inter-group studies in collaboration between the Nor-dic, Hovon and German CLL study groups. We have ensured assessment of novel combination treatments for CLL, leading to the current standard of treatment in current clinical guidelines and forming the basis for testing individually tailored treatment in clinical trials
  • With the B-cell receptor pathway at the core, our group has been part of a paradigm shift for treatment of CLL with novel targeted therapies developed also for patients with the most dismal outcome due to TP53 aberrations. 
  • With the parallel development of translational and experimental studies based on our unique DALY-CARE, we provide the basis for collaborative data-driven and molecular biology research in hematological cancer​.
