Copenhagen Neuroanaesthesiology and Neurointensive Care Research Group (CONICA)​ focus on anaesthesia and perioperative management for neurosurgery, interventional neuroradiology, and magnetic resonance imaging; intensive care for severe acute brain and spinal cord injury; multimodal neuromonitoring; and human-experimental models.​

​Our research aims to improve patient treatment. We focus on anaesthesia and perioperative management for neurosurgery, interventional neuroradiology, and magnetic resonance imaging; intensive care for severe acute brain and spinal cord injury; multimodal neuromonitoring; and human-experimental models.

Main research areas

  • Randomised clinical trials to improve care in patients with severe acute brain and spinal cord injury. Current trials concern ketamine sedation to treat cortical spreading depolarisations (KETA-BID), regimens for external ventricular drainage cessation (DRAIN), and improved treatment of subarachnoid haemorrhage (STOP DCI). 
  • Pathophysiology of acute brain and spinal cord injury. Emphasis on cortical spreading depolarisations, systemic and cerebral glucose metabolism, and nitrosative/oxidative stress. Our group takes an interest in advanced multimodal neuromonitoring both as a research tool and as a clinical monitoring modality. 
  • Physical therapy, rehabilitation, and consequences of critical illness including early mobilisation, dysphagia, and long-term cognitive impairment.
  • Cerebral effects of general anaesthesia with emphasis on neuroplastic changes induced by general anaesthesia in healthy volunteers.
  • Perioperative management in neurosurgical patients focusing on brain tumour surgery.
