Danish Red Blood Cell Center

The Danish Red Blood Center is the largest diagnostic and therapeutic center in the Nordic countries specializing on hereditary anemias. Our overall goal is to improve understanding and treatment of patients with hereditary aemias.

Main medical speciality: Internal medicine: haematology

Main research areas

Red Blood Cells and Iron

Our traditional core focus is translational research in classic hematology, especially iron metabolism and herediatry anemias such as hemoglobinopathies, membranopathies, and enzymopathies.

Clinical trials

As the Nordic reference center for hereditary anemias, we run numerous both commercial and investigator-initiated trials that may benefit our patients.

Epidemiology

Utilizing large Danish general population cohorts and the UK biobank, we study all aspects of hematology, which may lay the foundation for a rational work-up and treatment of individuals with all types of common clinical issues in hematology.

Projects

Danish Hereditary Anemia Database
  • Contact Person: Senior Physician Andreas Glenthøj
  • Disease Group: Patients suspected or diagnosed with a hereditary anemia
  • Purpose: Combine advanced diagnostic tests to ensure patients with anemia a correct diagnosis, facilitate collaboration across regional boundaries in Denmark, and provide the best possible treatment for patients with anemia.

Autoimmunity in Bone Marrow Failure
  • Contact person: Senior Physician Andreas Glenthøj and Senior Physician Ulrik Overgaard
  • Disease Group: Primarily patients with Paroxysmal Nocturnal Hemoglobinuria (PNH) and/or Aplastic Anemia (AA).
  • Purpose: The purpose of the trial is to investigate autoimmunity against stem cells in the bone marrow in conditions with bone marrow failure. The goal is to provide a basis for targeted treatment of these conditions.

Autoimmunity in Immune Thrombotic Thrombocytopenic Purpura
  • Contact person: Senior Physician Andreas Glenthøj and Senior Physician Ulrik Overgaard
  • Disease Group: Primarily patients with Paroxysmal Nocturnal Hemoglobinuria (PNH) and/or Aplastic Anemia (AA).
  • Purpose: The purpose of the trial is to investigate  underlying autoimmunity and provide basis for targeted treatment of these conditions.

Hereditary Hemolysis in a General Population Study
  • Student: Mathis Mottelson, PhD student
  • Purpose: Investigate the prevalence of and risks associated with hemolysis through the major Danish population surveys.

Hemochromatosis
  • Student: Mathis Mottelson, Ph.D. student
  • Purpose: Study as-yet unknown complications of hemochromatosis by exploiting the major Danish population cohorts.

Thrombocytopenia and Risk of Cancer and Death
  • Student: Anne Rudbeck Juhl, Ph.D. student
  • Purpose: Study risks associated with a low number of platelets (thrombocytes) through the extensive Danish population cohorts and the UK biobank in order to generate an evidence-based approach to managing individuals with a low number of platelets.

Examining the association between malaria and splenic injury in children with sickle cell anaemia
  • Contact person: Amina Nielsen Nardo-Marino, MD, Ph.D, Postdoc
