Our vision is based on our four principles, which set the course for innovation at Rigshospitalet. 

As a hospital and healthcare service, our core task is first and foremost to diagnose and treat patients. But our task is also to make a positive difference for people's quality of life and support their network, which plays a key role before, during and after treatment.

We are dealing with lives, and therefore we insist that future healthcare solutions take responsibility for the whole person – not just the individual treatment.

We always take account of the specific needs of our patients and healthcare professionals when initiating innovation projects. The solutions we work with have clear ownership and are deeply rooted in the clinical environment. We believe this is crucial if they are to be relevant and practicable.

Even though clinicians at Rigshospitalet are among the best in the world, future healthcare challenges are far too complex for us to overcome on our own. We therefore strive to break down silo mentalities by openly and actively involving relevant collaboration partners and the users who will ultimately benefit from our efforts.

Value for the individual patient is key for our work at Rigshospitalet. In our innovation efforts, we always give priority to solutions that generate the greatest healthcare value. We assess the potential for value creation in three ways. Value for PEOPLE is essential, PROFIT is desirable and value for the PLANET is the goal.

By focusing on three cohesive tracks, we improve innovation efforts at and around Rigshospitalet.

Implementation of new methods and solutions in clinical practice is far too slow. The Accelerator ensures that healthcare solutions are identified, developed, validated and scaled more quickly. 

The innovation team facilitate the entire process and contribute with specific deliverables in collaboration with external partners. Knowledge, resources and returns from global scaling are gathered in a fund for health innovation to reinvest in the development of new solutions.

At Rigshospitalet, we have a strong culture and are proud of our healthcare work. And rightly so because we are a global leader in the treatment of diseases. However, we are also looking at a future that will impose new requirements on the healthcare sector. We must be better at taking responsibility for the quality of life of our patients and we must be better at adopting new technologies which provide more flexible treatments options for patients. 

The Academy contributes to developing a strong culture of innovation and innovative thinking for clinical practice in collaboration with new specialist groups.

Our everyday clinical life is constantly changing. Patients impose new requirements and technology provides new opportunities. To take on the role as a global pioneer in developing future healthcare solutions, we look outside Denmark and learn from the best – including those from other industries. 

The Action Tank draws inspiration from Danish and international stakeholders at the heads of their fields: Noma, BIG architects, Copenhagen Airport. Industries that are very different from our own but can inspire innovation and innovative thinking in Rigshospitalet’s workflows and services. 

Innovation is about developing new methods and solutions that can be used in practice to make a positive difference for patients and healthcare professionals.  

To ensure that innovation at Rigshospitalet generates value for as many patients as possible, we have developed a model to accelerate new solutions from local to global value. 

Each step of the model includes specific deliverables, for example within testing, legal issues, data and business development. Such deliverables are provided by the team, as well as internal and external collaboration partners.

Sometimes, a solution is accelerated throughout the entire process, and in other instances, we help at individual steps.
