Collaboration

International collaborations are one of the pathways in which we fulfill our mission and strive to improve patient treatment. 


Copenhagen University Hospital - Rigshospitalet is the most specialised hospital for all patients in Denmark, Greenland and the Fairy Islands. With a strong tradition for international collaboration, we ensure treatment, research, and education at international top class. 

More than 1.2 million patients go through our doors every year, and we strive to give the best treatment available by realizing the potential of personalised medicine and use of artificial intelligence and robotics. As a key player in the Danish national data infrastructure, we are continuously developing and implementing new diagnostics, treatments and technologies with an underlined focus on a patient-centric way.

Denmark has a unique and extensive linkable data infrastructure consisting of centralized health databases and registers from the entire Danish population, national biobanks and genetic databases. Copenhagen University Hospital - Rigshospitalet is a key player in the national infrastructure creating the best opportunities for the use of personalised medicine. From research to clinical practice we strengthen research and development within personalised medicine - creating new diagnostics and treatments for our patients. 

Three elements of the national infrastructure located at our hospital: 

  1. A joint data centre with useful and analysable health data for citizens in Eastern Denmark
  2. A joint centre for whole genome sequencing
  3. A joint biobank centre of more than 27 million biological samples​.

​Implementation of new digital technologies is necessary for the public sector of the future to offer citizens the most efficient service levels while also making the best use of its resources.

For patients, it is not about a single encounter at a hospital, it is about the entire care journey. Data created in one instance must be made available in others to save lives, to increase quality of treatments and to enable healthcare organizations to work smarter and together in a patient-centric way.

With more control over their own healthcare choices and increasing deductibles, patients are putting pressure on the healthcare system with the objective to achieve high-quality care. Patient engagement has become a key strategy to promote informed decision-making and behaviors to facilitate improved health outcomes.​

The hospital engages in strategic cooperation on many levels, both in Denmark and internationally. Cooperation is vital for the continuous development of high-quality patient treatment, research, and the international profile of the hospital. Our doctors are active members of the European association within their field of speciality.

Local and regional collaboration (industrial and institutional) and international collaboration is supported externally through networks and associations, and within the organisation through units including the international coordinator, the hospital's research support unit, grants unit and The Innovation Centre.

The University Hospital of Copenhagen is a member of several international alliances and networks at hospital, centre and department levels. Our doctors are active members of the European Association within their field of speciality.

In addition to international partnerships, the hospital has fruitful collaboration, covering joint programmes, research projects, core facilities and strategic initiatives, with the University of Copenhagen, the Technical University of Denmark and Lund University in Sweden. Rigshospitalet also collaborates closely with other hospitals, universities and regional and local authorities to enhance patient care, research and teaching. 

Unique research facilities

MAX IV Laboratory at Lund University provides our scientists with the most brilliant X-rays for research. MAX IV is the largest X-ray system in the world for investigating materials at a previously untested molecular level.  ​

Greater Copenhagen Health Science Partners (GCHSP) 

Greater Copenhagen Health Science Partners is a partnership between the University of Copenhagen, the Technical University of Copenhagen, Region Zealand and the Capital Region of Denmark. The partnership will strengthen cooperation between researchers in basic ​​research laboratories and clinical researchers in the hospitals.

University researchers and clinical researchers can use GCHSP to learn from each other and develop new ideas, resulting in faster scientific results and better patient treatment.

Research has a very special priority at Rigshospitalet. Our total annual research budget is around €160 million. We have an extensive programme in basic research, translational research and clinical research, with

  • 150 professors
  • 100 post Docs.
  • 356 PhD researchers
  • 3,500 peer-reviewed publications annually.  
From our research laboratories, we carry out translational and clinical research with regard to all specialities. Rigshospitalet works with researchers within Denmark, the Nordic countries, Europe, the US, China and the rest of the world, and many of our publications with international collaborators are published in top-ranked scientific journals.
 
External funding from private and public foundations in Denmark, the EU, national institutes of health (NIH) and other international public and private foundations amounts to over €80 million per year.

​40 % of all Danish medical research is carried out at Copenhagen University Hospital - Rigshospitalet. This is the result of our extensive international and national network and cooperation. As a university hospital, we provide clinical support for research and student training in collaboration with the University of Copenhagen and the Technical University of Denmark. The hospital has CAMES, one of the world's leading academies for medical education and simulation, committed to increasing the quality and safety of patient treatment.​

Rigshospitalet was founded in 1757 and was the first hospital in the Nordic countries aiming to treat patients and gain more understanding of many evolving areas in medicine.

​Today, Copenhagen University Hospital - Rigshospitalet covers all the main medical specialist areas for both children and adults, with only a few exceptions​. Several of the hospital’s departments are nationally and internationally accredited and certified

As a hospital for the whole of Denmark it is important to us to ensure that our patients do not have to travel long distances every time they have a consultation, so we have more than 250.000 virtual contacts a year with the number increasing rapidly every year.

We receive patients from the whole of the country as well as Greenland and the Faroe Islands. The hospital also has a nationwide responsibility for a number of national and multi-regional assignments and has several national centres of competence. The hospital's special expertise must ensure that patients with the most complicated diseases, patients with rare diseases and the most ill patients receive an offer of treatment in Denmark.​​
