Organization and staff
The clinical activities in Danish Headache Center consist of a multidisciplinary out-patient service and an in-patient service. The staff consists of 2 psychologists, 4 physical therapists, 5 nurses, 1 team leader, 1 laboratory technician, 8 secretaries, 7 neurologists specialized in headache, 1 psychiatrist (one day per month), 1 dentist (one day per month), close clinical collaboration with an anesthesiologist and a variable number of younger physicians (all part time).
Management
Rigmor Højland Jensen - Professor, MD, DrMedSci
The center’s director Dr. Rigmor Højland Jensen is professor of Headache and Neurological Pain at the University of Copenhagen. Dr. Jensen has published more than 600 scientific papers and book chapters. Her main research interests include headache epidemiology and the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying tension-type headache, medication-overuse headache, cluster headache and CSF-disorders. Dr. Rigmor Højland Jensen has been the president of the Danish Headache Society, President of The Medical Society in Copenhagen and President of The European Headache Federation and trustee in The International Headache Society. At present she is Director in Lifting the Burden and member of the Scientific Committee of European Academy of Neurology (EAN) plus founder & chairman of Master of Headache Disorders at University of Copenhagen.
Messoud Ashina, MD, PhD, DMSc, FEAN
Professor Messoud Ashina is Professor of Neurology and Director of the Human Migraine Research Unit at the Department of Neurology & Danish Headache Center, Rigshospitalet Glostrup, the University of Copenhagen, Denmark. He is Past President of the International Headache Society (2019–2021) and is past General Secretary of the European Headache Federation. Prof. Ashina is a Fellow of the European Academy of Neurology. In addition, he is an Associate Editor of Cephalalgia, an Associate Editor of The Journal of Headache and Pain, and an Associate Editor of Brain.
Prof. Ashina's research interests include the pathophysiology of migraine and mechanisms of action of antimigraine medications, as well as experimental migraine and cluster headache models, functional neuroimaging, and novel antimigraine drug targets. He has authored over 500 papers, abstracts and book chapters on the topic of headache, including migraine and cluster headache.
Having obtained his MD from the Azerbaijan Medical University, Prof. Ashina went on to complete his residency in neurology at the University of Copenhagen, where he gained his PhD and DMSc. In the past, he has served as President of the Danish Headache Society.
Lars Bendtsen - associate Professor, MD, PhD, DrMedSci
Lars Bendtsen is co-director of the Danish Headache Center and is responsible for leading the clinical part of the center together with Helle Jensby. Lars Bendtsen has published more than 200 scientific papers and book chapters. His main research interests include clinical aspects and treatment of migraine and headache in general and more specifically the pathophysiology and management of trigeminal neuralgia, migraine, and medication overuse headache. He is past President of the Danish Headache Society.
Helle Jensby - BSc in economics and Business Adm., Med Sec.
Helle Jensby is responsible for leading the clinical part of the center together with Lars Bendtsen. She has a past as a Medical Secretary and has a BSc in Economics and Business Administration from Copenhagen Business School. Helle Jensby has previously worked in an intensive care unit and with strategic media planning. Helle Jensby is also the coordinator of the multidisciplinary team.
