Medical students
Course in pediatric surgery for physicians is scheduled in the last term of medical training in connection with the clinical residency in pediatrics.
There are 1-2 formalised tutorials in pediatric surgery subjects.
Furthermore some students will work 3 days at the Department of Pediatric Surgery.
It is possible to write Mandatory Individual Elective Assignments (in Danish OSVAL) within pediatric surgery subjects.
A professor of pediatric surgery is employed at the University of Copenhagen.

Physicians
In connection with the new Danish training programme structure from 2004, the plan is to formalise the education and training programme within the specialist field of pediatric surgery under the specialist subject surgery.
The subject comprises surgery on children. The age limit is determined arbitrarily as 0-16 years, however the specialist area also includes diagnostics and treatment of foetuses. The professional content is general surgery, neonatal surgery and other malformation surgery, gastroenterological surgery, urology and soft-tissue and oncologic surgery outside the central nervous system (CNS), limbs, heart and major vessels.

Pediatric surgery for specialists

Objectives description for pediatric surgery course for medical specialists
The objective of the pediatric surgery course is to enable the candidate to examine and treat children with surgical diseases. In addition to the basic training in general surgery, the course is to provide the candidate with knowledge about special physiological, anatomical and pathophysiological conditions and the special diseases and conditions in children, as well as knowledge about and practical training in operations and other procedures performed on children.

Level of competency
A specialist in pediatric surgery must be able to take responsibility for examination, diagnosis and treatment of children with surgical diseases as defined by the specialist area. The medical specialist must be able to practise as a specialist and be valued as such by public hospitals in Denmark and in the countries with which Denmark has entered agreement on the validity of the status as specialist.

The course is both practical and theoretical. The practical training takes place during clinical employments, the theoretical training is through mandatory courses. Joint Nordic courses in pediatric surgery are currently being prepared by the Scandinavian Association of Pediatric Surgeons.

The place of training for pediatric surgery is to cooperate with specialist units on:

Pediatric surgery course

The candidate participates in a mandatory pediatric surgery course in the training period.
Theoretical knowledge about general surgery subjects is included in the course under common trunk of surgery. The pediatric surgery course is to communicate the specialist knowledge necessary for performing surgery on children and is to provide the necessary theoretical background.
