Our approach at the Department of Vascular Surgery

Putting patients at the centre 

At the Department of Vascular Surgery Rigshospitalet we want to approach the patient in a holistic manner. We deal with patients with all kinds of vascular disease, and interventions include lifestyle changes as well as medical and/or surgical treatment (endovascular and open surgery). We also perform non-invasive investigations such as vascular ultrasonography and peripheral blood pressure measurements.

We aim to make the individual course of treatment as simple as possible for the patient, e.g. ultrasound examination on the first day of consultation (one-stop clinic). Treatment and care is planned in teamwork between various disciplines, with patients being allocated specific nurses and doctors during hospitalisation, according to coordinated standards and clinical guidelines. There is ongoing research, specialisation and development of competence.​

Quality assurace, development and documentation

Quality assurance, quality development and documentation are in focus and incorporated in routine daily work, as well as strategically, through the implementation of projects and other initiatives.  Work is continuing on a cohesive course of treatment for patients with as few contacts (people and visits) as possible - “gathering activities around the patient” and patients’ experience of their treatment and contact with the department.

Clinical quality is registered in the national databases, Karbase and Venebase. Nursing is documented in standard nursing plans​


The department is led by the department management, the Head of Clinic and Lead Nurse , in close collaboration with the general management group. Specialists and specialist councils and committes are involved in decision-making.

In order to incorporate specialist knowledge and experience in the organisation and management as well as possible, the department has developed a new management structure with TEAM formation and TEAM management as well as specialist managers. This type of organisation leads to uniform quality by revising and preparing common clinical guidelines and standards which are implemented by TEAM management and specialist managers.  

A TEAM management is appointed for each ward and out-patients clinic, comprising a Nursing Head of Department and a Consultant. The TEAM structure helps ensure continuity in patient treatment so that patients have to meet fewer different health personnel. The TEAM management’s job is to ensure that day-to-day work is carried out professionally, appropriately and in accordance with department policy, guidelines and instructions (PGI), as well as training obligations, values etc.

Specialist managers (consultants) from each of the two departments have been appointed within all the department’s larger elucidation  and treatment areas. Specialist managers are responsible for ensuring that the department carries out evidence-based treatment or treatment which lives up to current recommendations, and that PGIs for the area are prepared across specialities. 

This Includes responsibility for implementing and upholding recommendations by involving other specialists and managers from the department. The responsibilities of specialist managers also involve teaching within the area, ensuring that PGIs are kept up to date, and that the department takes a position on relevant new treatments within the area etc. ​

Co-influence, co-decision making, co-involvement (CCC )

The CCC Committee at the department of vascular surgery is cross-disciplinary at the two locations, Rigshospital and Gentofte Hospital, and it is composed of staff and managers. The Committee establishes the framework and foundation for collaboration, conditions and occupational health and safety. ​​

The Research Committee

The Research Committee at the Department of Vascular Surgery Rigshospitalet discusses and prioritises individual research and development projects, and several people in the department are actively engaged in research. In collaboration with the management group and the Quality Council, new research results and knowledge are implemented.

In collaboration with managers and the management at the department, experts such as professors, lecturers, quality managers, doctors and nurses responsible for training, medical specialists and specialist nurses attend to research training and development obligations and tasks.
