HISTORY

HISTORY – Herpesvirus Immunology in Solid Organ Transplant Recipients – Liver Transplant Study. Cellular immunological response to cytomegalovirus and varicella-zoster virus infections in liver transplant recipients.

The HISTORY study aims to investigate immunological and clinical risk factors for cytomegalovirus (CMV) and varicella-zoster virus (VZV) infections in liver transplant recipients. Participants provide blood samples prior to and after liver transplantation. PBMC phenotype and function, concentrations of inflammatory markers and mediators, CMV and VZV viral load and serology and other in-depth immunological analyses are performed in collaboration with the Technical University of Denmark. HISTORY will provide novel insight into the adaptive immunity required for viral control of CMV and VZV in this immunocompromised population.

We expect that results from the study will we used to generate algorithms to identify liver transplant recipients at high risk of CMV or VZV infections that could benefit from intensified prophylaxis. Furthermore, results from the study may be used to design new treatment modalities including adoptive T cell transfer.

The study protocol has been published and is available from https://doi.org/10.1186/s12879-023-08153-8.

Recruitment is ongoing and preliminary results are therefore pending.
