Thunder Imager – Advanced 3D cell culture assays

This is a full working live cell imaging solution using fluorescence to determine the distribution of a single molecule species, its amount and its localization inside a cell. Colocalization and interaction studies can be performed, and ion concentrations as well as intra- and intercellular processes like endocytosis and exocytosis can be observed. This imaging solution can also be used to study the complex systems modelled with organoids. A 3D cell culture system, such as organoids, spheroids or organ on-a-chip model is an artificial environment in which cells can grow and interact with their surroundings in all 3 dimensions, similar to in-vivo conditions.

Confocal microscopy – Sharp, fluorescent pictures

The Zeiss LSM 900 confocal microscope uses fluorescence optics. Instead of illuminating the whole sample at once, laser light is focused onto a defined spot at a specific depth within the sample. This leads to the emission of fluorescent light at exactly this point and sharper pictures. As the only confocal microscope it has ”Sample Navigator” that enables overlay with the light microscopy picture. It has the lowest signal to noise ratio and a resolution to 1 nm and uses linear confocal scan techniques that gives faster scans and lower bleaching.

Laser dissection microscopy – Precise cutting of microscopic tissue area

A method for isolating specific cells or entire areas of tissue in a way that is free of contact- and contamination. It can be done on a variety of tissue samples and the thickness, texture and preparation technique of the original tissue are relatively unimportant. Afterwards it is available for further molecular biological methods such as PCR, real-time PCR, proteomics and other analytical techniques.
