In our studies we have developed techniques for tissues regeneration by using the body itself as a bioreactor for cell expansion. These studies have been conducted in small and large animal models. In studies on pig, we have successfully used our techniques for creating a channel between the skin surface and the urinary bladder, with autologous urothelium lining the inner lumen. This channel can be used for emptying the bladder with a catheter in patients with dysfunctional bladders.
In ongoing studies on female rabbits, we have made major improvements to the technique and performed a surgical reconstruction of the vagina with autologous transplantation as a one-staged repair with endpoints such as fertility and delivery of rabbit cubs.
