Department of Neurology

  • Subspecialized in the areas of multiple sclerosis, memory disorders, neuromuscular diseases, cerebrovascular diseases and epilepsy. The Department also includes the Neurobiology Research Unit.
  • All specialized treatments are available within the areas of our subspecialities.
  • The focus is on clinical research, development and teaching within the speciality.
  • Consists of 43 beds including a unit dedicated to acute neurointensive care.
  • Receives approximately 2.000 admissions per year and includes a major outpatient clinic with approximately 16.000 visits per year.
  • Medical staff: 1 head of clinic, 6 professors, 14 consultants, 6 junior specialists and 16 junior doctors. A total of 58 nurses including 1 managing director and 10 nursing assistants/social and healthcare assistants, 26 secretaries, 7 neuropsychologists, 4 laboratory technicians and 1 social worker are employed.


A close collaboration is established between the departments of neurology at Bispebjerg Hospital and Rigshospitalet. The aim of the collaboration is to coordinate activities and divide subspecialities between the two departments. Both departments provide clinical examination, treatment, care and rehabilitation to patients with neurological diseases. The departments serve the Copenhagen area and receive patients from all Denmark, the Faroe Islands and Greenland. Both departments are part of the Copenhagen University Hospital and teach medical students in neurology.
