The clinic is responsible for anaesthesia and intensive therapy in connection with cardio-thoracic surgery.
We administer approximately 3,500 anaesthetics per year within the clinic, including Congenital and GUCH heart disease, Heart and Lung transplantation, and ECMO and ventricular assist programs. The department is also responsible for the care of all patients on the intensive therapy unit.
Anaesthesia also including on going assessments of the patient’s experience of the actual anaesthetic in terms of sleep and painlessness, but also ensuring the maintenance of circulation, pain control and infection control.
The anaesthetic cover includes 7 operating suites plus 2 outlying catheter suites. 24 hour coverage is provided for all the suites, plus emergency anaesthesia for the Trauma centre in aspects of anaesthesia for any patients with a thoracic component. This includes knife/gun assaults, acute cardiac surgery including paediatrics.
The 19 bedded ITU treats approximately 3000 patients a year, plus support for the cardiology intensive therapy unit, also it is responsible for adult and paediatric ECMO programs.
