Haematology

The Department of Haematology is responsible for treatment of all haematological disorders in adults according to internationally accepted guidelines and standards. The department is a centre of expertise for the treatment of blood diseases in Denmark.
The Department of Haematology charter is to provide optimum patient care and as widely as possible, add to the knowledge of the aetiology and pathogenesis of the blood disorders that are treated within the clinic. Also to develop more effective treatments and to build upon the existing understanding of haematological disorders.

Senior physician Lars Kjeldsen has overall responsibility for the department along with senior nurse Pernille Welinder.
The haematological disorders treated include amongst others;

• non malignant blood diseases such as, anaemia and haemostatic disorders
• malignant lymphoma
• multiple myeloma
• acute leukaemias as well as chronic lympho- and myeloproliferative disorders.

The department provides bone marrow transplantations both with the patients own stem cells or with bone marrow from related and unrelated donors.
The department is split into 4 integrated units or clinics that each comprise of out-patients, day-care and ward units. Each department is managed by a leader team comprising of a specialist doctor, a department nurse and a secretary.

Research and Development
The clinic's research effort is focussed in the areas of:

• Quantifying of allergic reactions, immune system function, graft-versus-host sickness, graft-versus-leukaemia effect and minimal residual sickness.
• To undertake experimental research in autologous stem cell transplantation among these specifically, minimal residual disease and the function of cell-cycle aberrations with respect to the success of high dose therapy.
• To investigate cell and the molecular biology of CD5+B-cell malignancies. (B-cell chronic lymphatic leukaemia (CLL) and mantle cell lymphoma(MCL), especially the molecular regulation of cell cycles and apoptosis.
• Neutrophile granulocytic cell biology, focussing on the functional characteristics of 3 newly discovered proteins, hCAP-18, NGAL and Grancalcin.
• Regulation of gene transcription during myelopoiesis in normal and malignant cells.
• The clinical effect of high dose treatment and autologous stem cell transplantation in relation to leukaemia, malignant lymphoma and myeloma.
• Flow cytometric quantifying of activated thrombocytes in relation to chronic myeloproliferative diseases.Flow cytometric quantifying of circulating thrombocytes-leukocyte aggregations in relation to chronic myeloproliferative diseases. Quantifying of fribrosis and coagulation parameters in the same patient group.
