Department of Infectious Diseases

The Department is specialized in infectious diseases and comprise twenty stationary beds, receiving 1,000 acute admissions per year: 20% HIV patients, 20% patients from other departments in the hospital with infectious complications, the remaining mainly cases referred from other hospitals with severe infections, especially pulmonary, CNS-related or systemic. Also patients with fever of unknown origin and travel related illnesses. For severe cases the Department have access to beds in the central ICU in the hospital. Only a few patiens are less than 16 years.

The Out-patient clinic receive 7,000 visits/year, two third of which are from the cohort of approx. 1,200 HIV-patients being followed here. Also a number of patients with chronic hepatitis and tuberculosis are treated here. Furthermore new patients are seen referred from primary care, as well as control visits following admissions. The In-patient Ward receive approx. 1,000 patients/year.  

The medical staff comprises: approx. six consultants plus 11 physicians in training for infectious diseases or internal medicine. The staff includes also 35 nurses and 10 secretaries.
