Fast track surgery

Fast-track surgery is planned and organised in a disciplinary collaboration where the focus is on key factors:

  • Minimal invasive surgical techniques
  • Prevention of complications in relation to surgery
  • Effective dynamic pain treatment
  • Early mobilisation and oral nutrition
  • Involvement from the patient as an active participant

Research within pathophysiology, pain treatment, nutrition, mobilisation, organisation (including weight of nursing), economic consequences, patient satisfaction and information for patients. This research is the foundation for the development of fast-track surgery.

Nursing
Nursing within fast-track surgery has focus on the perioperative period, which is defined as the time from the patient gives consent for surgery and until the patient has ended out-patient control. The course is divided into 3 periods: 1) preparation period, 2) admission period and 3) convalescence and rehabilitation period.
Nutrition, mobilisation and pain treatment are areas, which weight heavily in all the courses.

Patient information

It is important that the patient is taught and obtains knowledge about the clinical pathway so that the patient can be active during admission. It is also important that the patient has knowledge and motivation at the time of discharge so that the patient can be rehabilitated fast.
