Bruce R. Rosen, professor at Harvard Medical School, receives Rigshospitalet's International KFJ Award 2011

Rigshospitalet has instituted a new annual award; the Rigshospitalet International KFJ Award. The award of DKK 1.5 million has been made possible by a donation from the Kirsten and Freddy Johansen Foundation.

Of this amount, DKK 1.25 million will go directly to research collaboration with Rigshospitalet to help development of research and treatment of patients for the future.


The award for 2011 goes to Bruce R. Rosen, who is professor of radiology at Harvard Medical School and Director of the Athinoula A. Martinos Center for Biomedical Imaging, Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston. Bruce Rosen is one of the internationally most recognised researchers within image formation of the brain.

- "There can be no doubt that Rigshospitalet is doing the right thing by focussing internationally. Research today is international. To stay in the lead, even in Denmark, we have to be able to rub shoulders with the major players; and Rigshospitalet can do this. Our political focus in the Regional Council is on retaining and enhancing Rigshospitalet's profile as the arrowhead in the region, and for the rest of Denmark, in highly specialised diagnostics and treatment," says Vibeke Storm Rasmussen, chairman of the Regional Council.

- "We're looking forward to the forthcoming close collaboration between Rigshospitalet, Bruce Rosen and the research centre in Boston Indeed it is a great professional privilege that, with this generous donation from the Kirsten and Freddy Johansen Foundation, we can tie bonds to an international leading light like Bruce Rosen," says Jannik Hilsted, Medical Director at Rigshospitalet.

- "This is a perfect research marriage between two unique research groups. With this award we can unite and strengthen our research competences between Boston and Copenhagen, and the research programme will build bridges between some of the world's leading competences within radiotherapy (PET) and brain imaging (MR)," says Professor Bruce Rosen, and he continues:

- "As Director of the Biomedical Imaging Center, for many years now I have had the pleasure of teaching and following students' work very closely, and this collaboration will mean that we and the students can now travel between Copenhagen and Boston and strengthen our research by sharing knowledge and experience on site - and across the Atlantic.

More specifically, the award means that Bruce Rosen and researchers from Rigshospitalet can now set up a joint research programme at Rigshospitalet, which reaches across to the US.
