Research paves the way for the future

It is like finding a needle in the haystack. Nevertheless persistent researchers continue their valuable work on improving treatments and obtaining new knowledge - and this is imperative for the future.

Research is the trademark of Rigshospitalet, and therefore research is being given the highest status and priority. Rigshospitalet achieves and communicates its results through extensive national and international collaboration, and each of the hospital’s eight centres has a number of special focus areas within research.

Discovery of a cancer gene
As a result of the hospital’s research profile, Rigshospitalet is at the forefront of new discoveries within health sciences. In 2008, after several years’ work, researchers from Rigshospitalet were able to report the discovery of a new gene only found in humans with “chronic lymphocytic leukaemia”. This discovery has now been patented and will have a practical useful value world-wide, where it can be used for diagnosis, prognosis and for monitoring patients with this specific disease.

In 2009 research will top the agenda at Rigshospitalet and research results will be communicated in acknowledged scientific journals and to the general public through written media, TV, events and publications.
