Integrated collaboration across hospitals

In 2008 a unique collaboration was established where the Department of Radiation Oncology at Rigshospitalet was expanded with a satellite function in the town of Næstved.

This involves daily exchange of doctors between Næstved Sygehus and the Department of Radiation Oncology at Rigshospitalet as well as three weekly video conferences. These are the main elements in a new collaboration launched in 2008. With the satellite function in Næstved, radiation oncology has been reinforced and the two accelerators at Næstved were added to the 13 already at Rigshospitalet. Alternating exchangeAt weekly video conferences all patients at the two hospitals’ departments of radiation oncology are reviewed, and the doctors are able to study medical records and x-rays as well as exchange experience face-to-face by means of video technology.

“In this way we can treat patients in Næstved with a professionalism that meets the world’s most demanding standards. There is no other place with similar technology, and we have succeeded fully in meeting the professional challenges involved in this integrated collaboration. Staff collaboration is also working perfectly,” says Svend Aage Engelholm, Chief Radiation Oncologist and Consultant Physician from the Department of Radiation Oncology at Rigshospitalet.

Three doctors and a physicist are responsible for radiation oncology at Næstved Sygehus. In addition, doctors from Rigshospitalet take shifts at Næstved, and similarly doctors from Næstved Sygehus are working at Rigshospitalet for four-week periods. The purpose of this exchange is to maintain professional levels.
