Accelerated patient courses

Accelerated patient courses provide better treatment
More focus on patient courses and e.g. analgesic treatment and rehabilitation after surgery might increase the quality of treatment. This was the result of research into accelerated patient courses in 2008. Such research will be given higher priority in future.

Accelerated patient courses are a treatment concept that involves reducing the time of rehabilitation after surgery, thereby reducing the time of hospitalisation so that the patient can return to a normal life more quickly. This field is subject to increasingly more focus, and in 2008 research results showed great benefits from this approach to treatment.

A new research centre
The implementation of accelerated patient courses requires  strong collaboration across different clinics and departments and higher focus on patient information. Our efforts have been rewarded. In 2008 the Department of Breast Surgery introduced accelerated patient courses with shorter hospitalisation periods without increased complications and with high patient satisfaction - notably without higher costs.

In 2008, the time of confinement to bed was specifically reduced from 3.4 to 1.4 days on average. When nurses do not have to deal with problems with pain and nausea of patients who are in bed to the same extent as before, they have more time to give patients information and psychosocial care. This means patients feel better cared for - and that patients are hospitalised for a shorter period of time.
