Medical students Course in paediatric surgery for physicians is scheduled in the last term of medical training in connection with the clinical residency in paediatrics.There are 1-2 formalised tutorials in paediatric surgery subjects.Furthermore some students will work 3 days at the Department of Paediatric Surgery.It is possible to write Mandatory Individual Elective Assignments (in Danish OSVAL) within paediatric surgery subjects.A professor of paediatric surgery is employed at the University of Copenhagen.

PhysiciansIn connection with the new Danish training programme structure from 2004, the plan is to formalise the education and training programme within the specialist field of paediatric surgery under the specialist subject surgery. The subject comprises surgery on children. The age limit is determined arbitrarily as 0-16 years, however the specialist area also includes diagnostics and treatment of foetuses. The professional content is general surgery, neonatal surgery and other malformation surgery, gastroenterological surgery, urology and soft-tissue and oncologic surgery outside the central nervous system (CNS), limbs, heart and major vessels.
One thing is to have state-of-the-art scanners; another thing is to decode the scan images. Rigshospitalet was one of the first hospitals in Europe to acquire an ultra-fast CT scanner. The hospital is now teaching physicians from all over the world to read scans of the heart.

Associate professor Thomas Bjarnsholt has received the Young Investigator Award for Research in Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases from the European Society of Clinical Microbiology and infectious diseases (ESCMID).
