Department of Plastic Surgery, Breast Surgery and Burns Treatment
The Department of Plastic Surgery, Breast Surgery and Burns Treatment is the largest plastic surgery department in Denmark. The department is divided into five professional expert sections:
The department cooperates with all surgical departments at Rigshospitalet and a wide range of advanced treatments and reconstructions are performed by cross-disciplinary teams. In May 2010, the department merged with the Department of Breast Surgery, linking general and oncological breast surgery treatment to the oncoplastic breast surgery function. The department receives patients from the Copenhagen region and from Bornholm, the Faeroe Islands and Greenland. The department has national function for cleft lip-gum-palate, severe ear and cranial malformations, regional chemotherapy for malignant melanoma and certain soft-tissue tumours (Hyperthermic Regional Perfusion, HRP) as well as treatment of large burns (> 15 per cent TBSA in adults and > 10 per cent TBSA in children).Purely cosmetic plastic surgery is not carried out at public departments in Denmark, and therefore not at Rigshospitalet either.Professionally, the department is the most broad-based department of plastic surgery in Northern Europe. In 2009 the medical journal Dagens Medicin nominated the department as the best department of plastic surgery and breast surgery in Denmark. The department has a large educational function at pregraduate and postgraduate levels for physicians, nurses and secretaries. In 2009 the department was the education department in Denmark that attracted most young surgeons. The department has long-term cooperation with colleagues outside Denmark, for example in Australia. The department also has exchange programmes with foreign plastic surgeons and young physicians in training in long-term residencies.
