Advantage from consolidating treatments



In order to provide the best treatment it pays to gather specialist areas at few sites. This optimises the use of resources and improves quality - but it also results in some specific physical challenges at Rigshospitalet.

The process of consolidation of medical specialist areas has continued as part of the Hospital Plan of the Capital Region of Denmark for 2007.

The mergers are being realised because it is clear that they give rise to both treatment and work-related advantages. Consolidation of specialist areas leads to higher quality while at the same time we are able to offer the best treatment at all hours of the day. This is because more treatments carried out in the same place and by the same healthcare professionals result in higher quality. More experts to treat diseases make it easier to ensure that offers of treatment are given year round and at all hours.

The consolidation of specialist areas led to a number of mergers, and in 2008 employees from Frederiksberg and Gentofte Hospital were transferred to Rigshospitalet; employees at Rigshospitalet now have 1,000 new colleagues.

There is currently not enough room at Rigshospitalet for all these new colleagues and therefore a large part of the new employees are continuing to work at other hospitals in the region as external functions from Rigshospitalet.

In the long term, the framework of Rigshospitalet will be improved by building a new wing and renovating etc. so that the hospital’s functions can all be housed at Rigshospitalet.

Cross-functional inspiration
The mergers also gave rise to challenges when several different departments and hospitals had to unite work methods and traditions. One not inconsiderable challenge was that many different IT-systems are used at the hospitals of the region. However, the results have been positive and the merged clinics/departments are working to inspire one another and exploit different resources.
