A new knowledge centre for young people

When you belong to neither the childrens’ department nor the adults department, hospitalisation and receiving the correct help can be especially difficult. A new knowledge centre for young people was opened in 2008 that enables 12-18 year-olds to become involved in the development of the hospital.

The Knowledge Centre for Youth Medicine (Ungdomsmedicinsk Videnscenter) opened its doors on 1 November 2008 and the initiative aims at creating better conditions for young hospitalised persons who have their feet in both camps because they are neither children nor adults.

The Centre has been established with support from the Egmont Foundation (Egmont Fonden) and is located at Rigshospitalet. The aim is to increase the knowledge of health services about young people to improve preventive, treatment and rehabilitation efforts.

The Centre is also to teach and train technical and health educational staff to support young people. The Centre’s staff comprises a nurse, two doctors, a psychologist, a teacher/childcarer and a social worker.

Furthermore, an advisory youth panel will be established to motivate efforts of the Knowledge Centre. The results from the Centre will benefit hospitals and sick young people throughout Denmark.
