Department of Growth and Reproduction

The Department of Growth and Reproduction receives the Global Excellence Award for its internationally acknowledged work in hormonal disruptions.
Visions and goals
One of the subjects that the Department of Growth and Reproduction wants excel in is hormone-sensitive issues concerning growth and reproduction.

This can be done, for instance, by examining lifestyle and environmental factors that influence the increase in the number of people with this type of problem.

By focusing on dissemination of results, the department is aiming at achieving the highest international level possible in its work.

Facts about the Department of Growth and Reproduction
The department has 94 employees and it works especially with the Cancer Department, the Department of Paediatrics and the Fertility Department at Rigshospitalet.

In addition, the department has more than 90 international cooperation partners.
The researchers at the department write 45 original articles/reviews annually on average.

The physical organisation underpins the work of the department with its short distances between the researchers’ laboratories and patient consultation by the treatment providers. This means that research results can quickly be used in treatments, and that it is possible to discuss problems with treatment in the laboratories.

Research and results
Bridge-building between basic research and treatment means the Department of Growth and Reproduction is at the forefront nationally and internationally.

The department has documented a number of problems, such as falling age of puberty and record-high occurrences of abnormalities in the genital organs of boys.

The department has also proven that 40 percent of Danish men have sperm quality so low that they may have difficulty reproducing; knowledge which is pivotal in defining problems so that solutions can be developed.

One of the projects that the department is working on is about screening for testicular cancer.
